Just be more conscious of it. I used to bite my nails all the time, and my fingers always looked so gross. So I told myself that I would stop. To help wean myself off from it I let myself put my fingers in my mouth still and wedged my nails between my front teeth, but no longer chewed them off. I also had a boyfriend at the time that HATED when I chewed on my fingers, so he would help remind me to stop, ask a friend or your partner to do the same for you and the conditional therapy will eventually kick in.

I am not going to lie, every once in a while I still get the over whelming urge to chew them all off, but not very often, and its a lot better then it used to be.

Good luck, you can change if you want to. All it takes is a little self control.

i don't know if you've tried this, but i had to end up putting band aids on my fingertips. You may look funny but it broke me of the habit.

1. Wrap an Ace bandage around the elbow, making it difficult, but not impossible, to move your hand to your mouth.

2. Buy non-toxic gels/liquid which you can put on your finger nails so that when you go to bite your nails, you'll get a bad taste. After a few times, you'll get the hint not to do it anymore.

3. Give yourself a reward for quitting. Say you'll buy yourself something nice, get yourself a pet, whatever. It may sound childish, but when a reward is involved, anyone will hop to it.

4. Tap yourself with a bamboo stick whenever you feel you're going in for the bite. Don't hurt yourself, just make it known to yourself that it's not a good idea. Alternatively, wear an elastic band loosely around your wrist. When you get the urge to nibble, give yourself a snap!

5. Keep your hands busy. Take up a hobby which will keep your hands preoccupied.

6. Wear gloves - if all else fails.

7. Another alternative paint your nails... with nail polish (duh!) and something in your mind makes you NOT want to bite your nails. Try it and you'll have gorgeous nails in no time!

8. Men (and women, but especially men) who bite their nails can benefit from using "hard-as-steel-strengthening" or "miracle-grow" brush-on nail treatments. These thicken and strengthen the nail so much that it's hard to bite the nail off. They're clear, too, so no one will question your masculinity.

9. If you find yourself slipping and biting a nail, accept the fact that you're human and that you're in the process of stopping. Praise yourself for the length of time you went without biting your nails and see if you can break the record next time.

I have the same problem. You should get a nice manicure and then you won't want to bite. I've tried the same bitter stuff. I still bite, too. Is it just how they look? Or is it not apperance? Because you could just buy a nail set and just smooth them out for 10 minutes every night. Mail me for more.
